- Point-to-Point (PTP): A dedicated fiber line runs from the central office to each individual customer, offering excellent bandwidth and security but at a higher cost.
- Point-to-Multipoint (PON - Passive Optical Network): This is more common. A single fiber from the central office is shared by many customers and then split using unpowered optical splitters closer to the premises. The signal is converted to an electrical signal inside the property by an Optical Network Terminal (ONT).
