How it works
- Leverages existing lines: Uses the same copper wires as traditional phone service.
- Frequency splitting: Divides the line's bandwidth into different frequency ranges: one for voice (low frequency) and others for data (higher frequencies).
- Asymmetry: Allocates more bandwidth to downstream (download) than upstream (upload) because most users download more data than they upload.
- Filters/Splitters: Requires ADSL filters (or microfilters) to prevent phone equipment from interfering with the data signal and vice versa.
- DSLAM: At the telephone exchange, a Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) separates the ADSL traffic from voice traffic.
